Story:

The desert yam or bush potato refers to the tubers or swollen roots of the Ipomoea costata, a fast-growing creeper adorned with large purplish-pink trumpet flowers. These tubers grow underground while the viny shrub extends above ground, reaching up to one meter in height. Commonly found on spinifex sand plains, this plant produces its vibrant flowers after summer rains.

The Anaty: A Nutritious and Versatile Food Source

Known as Anaty, these tubers are much like the common sweet potato in taste and can be eaten raw or cooked. The desert yam remains a staple food for Aboriginal people in various parts of Australia and can be harvested year-round, especially after significant rainfall. Some Anaty tubers can grow as large as a person's head, making them a substantial food source.

Cultural Representation in Art

In her paintings, Jeannie captures the essence of the Anaty. Through intricate dot work, she depicts the seeds of the Anaty, while brushwork brings the tuber and its flowers to life. This artistic representation not only showcases the plant's physical characteristics but also highlights its cultural significance.
