Dreamtime Sisters are beautifully illustrated in this painting, capturing their joyful spirits as they dance the Awelye (Women’s Ceremony) and tend to Colleen’s country, Arnumarra, located northeast of Alice Springs in Central Australia.
Significance of Dreamtime Sisters
Colleen explains, "My country is called Arnumarra, that is my grandfather’s country. In my painting, the Dreamtime Sisters are a group of spirits that look after the land and guard special areas such as sacred sites. They were the first people in the Dreamtime. They created sacred sites, and it is their role to protect these sites, the country, individuals, and guide families."
The Role of Dreamtime Sisters
The Dreamtime Sisters are seen dancing and floating above sacred sites, embodying their ancestral role of protecting and nurturing the land. Colleen tells us that these sisters were once living people—her ancestors. These ancestral spirits vary, with some being a little cheeky, and every country has its own spirits dedicated to guarding the land and its people.
