Story:
The kangaroo is one of the largest and most iconic animals in Australia. Among them, the red kangaroo is the largest, followed by the grey kangaroo and numerous smaller relatives, such as wallabies, which inhabit the drier inland regions.
Kangaroo: A Valuable Resource
For traditional Aboriginal people, the kangaroo is a valuable source of food. Its meat is highly prized, and other parts, such as the hide, bone, and gristle are utilized to create ornaments, artifacts, and weapons.
Expert Hunters and Trackers
Aboriginal hunters have coexisted with kangaroos for thousands of years and have become expert trackers. They must silently stalk these agile animals, which can move much faster than humans. This deep connection is depicted in ancient rock art, illustrating scenes of hunters spearing their prey and celebrating successful hunts.
Kangaroos in Contemporary Aboriginal Art
Modern Aboriginal paintings often portray kangaroos as integral parts of the natural world. These artworks highlight the kangaroo as a prized food source and as a totemic symbol from the Dreaming. The kangaroo's significance is deeply rooted in Aboriginal mythology, with Ancestor spirits linked to these important animals, reinforcing their role in Dreamtime law.
